PART 1 of the Fruit Faes series

I officially dub this girl 'Apple Girl' because the colour composition really reminds me of apples...mm, yum. I like apple scented soap.

I'm not too impressed by how "clean" this piece is because you can obviously see the brush strokes in the background, but I am, however, pleased with the colour combination. Ah, I am improving after all...FINALLY. It's been a great improvement, but there'll be much more to learn. Oh, I can't wait to get better (that is if I ever do)!

Eh, I know my composition sucks as evident by my signature stuffed in a random place, as well as the background (because I am always too lazy to draw a scenery so I end up using large brush strokes to fill in the empty space) so you can obviously see how much tender loving care went into planning this piece. *shot in the head by Apple Girl*

This piece is greatly influenced by one of Sypri's work, Lovely in Chartreuse. You can see the obvious colour similarities except Lovely in Chartreuse has a cooler colour scheme with blues, and mine, reds (cuz' I don't want to look like I'm ripping it off). Hmm, I realise I'm drawing a lot of things from this person. Ah well.

I actually wanted to make her hair longer, but then I thought that I would be unable to carry it out properly (without it looking like straggly fish nets, that is).

Her eyes are closed because I have zero confidence in painting eyes. The last time I tried...well you can see how it turned out. It was freaky, not to mention they look like they're popping out...so I went for a closed eye with nice green mascara. The green looks delicious...

I don't like how her feet and hands turned out. I really must learn how to colour those, or better yet, learn how to even draw them. My anatomy sucks, as you can probably tell. She has too big a butt, too thin a waist (and wrist and ankles and anything else that's not a bust or a butt or a face), too long a leg, too awkward a limb, and her neck looks broken.

I also wanted more contrast in her hair (but really, I want contrast everywhere), but I was afraid I would ruin it if I tried...ugh. I need to learn to take risks. Too many layers slow PS down by a bunch, so I need to paint quite a bit on the same layer...or have confidence that after merging you don't need to go back and do something that requires unmerging (because there is no such function as 'unmerge').

I'm pretty satisfied with the crease in her dress and the way her dress flows, but it could do with a bit more detail in the bottom part. Oh, I especially love the bust area. There's an overload of details there.

Oh ho, does anyone else get the feeling that the background behind her seems to be vaporising upward toward the right? How did that happen? Ah well. I guess it does look kinda cool...to me.

Part 1 - HERE
Part 2 - Mango
Part 3 - Cherry
(If anyone knows how to make an image link, please do tell me. I've been trying for a while and I still can't get it right. I even referenced the dA FAQ section and used their example.)

Sketch: PS CS5
Colour: PS CS5
Time: 4hrs (wow, that's pretty short...considering I spent 30min on final adjustments and all)
Tablet: Genius MousePen i608

EDIT: You know, I actually wanted to send this off to Extravaganza but then I realised that the deadline was 5 November and today is the 6th. Darn, so close. I thought that maybe I could win something (like a consolation prize? Or maybe special mention or something). Urg. I really like this piece, considering how strange my other (older) pieces look to me now...

EDIT 2: I'll be making this into a series of pieces called 'Fruit Faes'. There'll be a total of 6 pieces (if my perseverence doesn't fail me). If I'm not mistaken, the next one should be Mango. Please watch out for it!

Eh, I have also realised that this makes a rather good desktop wallpaper...I dunno, but I'm not using it because it's too bright for me. The wallpaper I currently use is black and red.

somehow this reminds me of those illustrations in magazines like the Du Zhe Wen Zhai. I love the fluid lines and the way the colours weave into one another in a well-flended fruity combo. :)
